Should you do your marketing yourself as a new business?

21 Nov 2021 | Digital Marketing, Launching

When launching a business it’s tempting to rationalise to yourself that by not outsourcing you’re saving yourself money.

The opposite is actually true.

After launching and growing over 600 brands these past few years, we’re confident to say it always pays to hire the experts if you’re serious about making your new business a success. And we’re not just talking about your marketing. Whilst this article will specifically cover launch marketing for your new business, the same can be said for all areas of your business including legals, financials, logistics and HR.

You’re saving money, but losing opportunity

This is a mindset shift and one you need to learn quickly if you want to be successful in growing a business.

Whilst it can be tempting to do everything yourself in the name of “saving money”, it’s impossible to think one person can do everything it takes to get a business off the ground; especially in the early stages.

Yes, you may have to pay from your own pocket to have a logo, website and social media strategy professionally crafted, if you don’t do it properly you risk not connecting with potential customers and therefore losing the sale (i.e. losing the opportunity to make sales).

For example, we recently re-created a client’s website which was only converting at 0.84%. That means, if they had 1,000 visitors to their site, only 8 of these visits would result in a customer spending money with them.

Once we reviewed the data and recreated the site in line with our Conversion Rate Optimisation strategies, this site is now returning at a whopping 12.3%.

That means for every 1,000 visitors, this brand now makes, on average, 123 sales.

And we haven’t even looked at what we’ve done for their average order amount.

If we built their site from the start, we could have made them hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue they have otherwise lost to a badly converting website.

Get the people power of an experienced team

A website created by an experienced and talented marketing team is not the same as one created by you as the business owner.

Heck, it’s not even the same as a website created by a freelance graphic designer or a single web developer.

When you have an entire team of passionate professionals working together to make your project a raging success, you’re benefiting not just from quicker timeframes.

You’re also benefiting from varying perspectives and diverse skillsets who know what works and what doesn’t.

Even if you consider yourself quite the marketer, when it’s your own business you’re often to close to the project to deliver results that move the needle (take it from me…)

*Actually* get things done

How long has “start email marketing” been sitting on your to-do list?

Like, actually?

Marketing is the first thing that gets pushed by busy business owners and it’s because it’s a pro-active activity.

The tax department isn’t going to fine you for launching your Facebook Ads late.

Your customers aren’t going to send you a bad review because you didn’t update that landing page.

The bank isn’t freezing your credit card because you never created that Instagram Reel.

All of these “must do’s” of today take priority over the “should do’s” for tomorrow. Unless you make it someone’s job to do them for you.

When you make the decision to hire a marketing team to be responsible for hitting deadlines and getting shit done, that’s exactly what’s going to happen. And your business will launch and grow in the timelines you want it to.
